Cal Lee joins Warrior staff

CAL LEE

Saint Louis School athletic director Cal Lee has accepted an offer to serve as an assistant football coach at the University of Hawai'i, The Advertiser has learned.

UH coach June Jones will announce the appointment at a news conference today.

Lee, who led the Crusaders to 15 O'ahu Prep Bowl titles or state championships before retiring as head coach in December 2001, yesterday told The Advertiser he was scheduled to meet with Jones to "tie up some loose ends." Lee declined further comment.

But two sources told The Advertiser last night that Lee and Jones met yesterday afternoon, at which time Lee accepted an offer to join the Warriors as a defensive assistant.

Lee will fill the vacancy created by Kevin Lempa, who resigned as defensive coordinator in February to coach the defensive backs at Boston College.

Lee, according to the two sources, will not be UH's defensive coordinator. Instead, the Warriors are expected to use the system employed in spring practice when Jones and defensive assistants George Lumpkin, Vantz Singletary and Rich Miano coordinated the defense. Although the defense is expected to be run by committee, one assistant — most likely Lumpkin, the associate head coach — will hold the title.

Lee's contract with Saint Louis is scheduled to expire June 30. Although he will resign as the Crusaders' athletic director and likely not return as head coach of the Hawaiian Islanders of arenafootball2, Lee is expected to remain as manager of the Crusader Lounge, a clubhouse administered by the Saint Louis Alumni Association.
