Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i Pacific University women's volleyball team announced the signing of two Brazilians yesterday.

Flavia Brakling of Sao Paulo and Paula Nascimento of Belo Horizonte will play for the Sea Warriors next season.

Brakling, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, helped National American University of South Dakota to a 41-0 mark and the NAIA national championship this season.

Nascimento, a 6-2 outside hitter, played for Lake Land College, a junior college in Illinois, for two years and led it to a ninth-place finish at the national tournament this season.

"Brakling and Nascimento are welcome additions to our program," HPU coach Tita Ahuna said.

"Both girls come to HPU from very respectable programs and have the tools we're looking for to take us back to the NCAA Tournament."

Punahou second: State high school champion Vicci Yau and Punahou School's girls took second places in the Daisy International 3-Position air rifle championship Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C.

Punahou's Yau was second in individual standings with a score of 548, three points behind winner Craig Dickson in the mixed competition. Teammate Christen Kam, who was runner-up in the state meet, placed 13th Wednesday with 526 points and Kara Tellio was 17th at 517. Cheryl Kobayashi was the fourth member of the Punahou team, coached by Karen Finley, which won the state high school championship in November.

Punahou also will represent Hawai'i in the National Junior Olympics 3-position championships this weekend.
