Church to celebrate 20 year mark

Advertiser Staff

Name of church: Hawaii Kai United Church of Christ

Denomination: United Church of Christ

Where we are: Worship takes place at 10 a.m. Sunday mornings at Haha'ione Elementary School, 595 Pepeekeo St. The office is at 6650 Hawaii Kai Drive, Suite 221.

Our numbers: About 100 members, with the same size average Sunday attendance.

Our pastor: Janice Ogoshi

What we believe: "We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, and we are to take his life, teachings, and sacrifice on the cross seriously in our lives," said Ogoshi. "We believe that the Holy Spirit leads and guides us to know God and to share God's love with those around us. We believe that the church is the people of God, and we are called together to be a blessing to the world by sharing God's love."

Our history: In 1983, seven members of Makiki Christian Church were commissioned to start a new church in Hawai'i Kai with Sarah Sato.

The church began with Bible studies and worship services held at the home of Sarah and Henry Sato.

"We now have a number of Bible study groups that meet throughout the week in various homes, along with our Sunday morning worship services," said Ogoshi.

What we're exited about: The church will celebrate its 20th anniversary in July, and the church is sponsoring an event, "Saturday Nite Delights," 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 12 at Haha'ione Elementary School. There will be an inflatable jumper for children, a stew and rice dinner, and a movie, "Monsters, Inc."

"It's all free," adds Ogoshi.

What's special about us: "Because we don't have a facility, we have a strong sense of the church as the people of God," said Ogoshi. "We are organized around ministry teams, rather than committees. Members are encouraged to join ministry teams that allow them to use their spiritual gifts in areas about which they are passionate. We have strong lay leaders."
