Advertiser Staff

Lisa Fernandez batted 3 for 3 and drove in four runs, and Keira Goerl pitched a three-hitter to lead the United States national softball team to a 12-1 victory over Canada in the U.S. Cup at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium last night.

Earlier yesterday, Team USA pounded 18 hits to rout Greece, 13-3.

Team USA is the only undefeated team in the tournament at 4-0, outscoring its opponents, 43-5. Canada is 2-2. Greece and Taipei are 1-3. The tournament continues today and ends tomorrow.

In the win over Canada, Team USA's Leah O'Brien-Amico was 2 for 2, including a bases-empty homer in the third inning. Amico had a two-run double and Fernandez singled in two runs in a five-run fourth. Nina Lindenberg hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give USA a 12-0 lead.

Goerl, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, struck out five and walked none, allowing an earned run in the sixth. The game was called after six innings because of the tournament's mercy rule.

In the victory over Greece, Lindenberg went 3 for 5, including a double and home run and had three RBIs. Crystl Bustos went 2 for 2, including a homer with three RBIs.

In the USA first, Amanda Freed singled to right field, followed by a walk to Natasha Watley. Bustos then hit a homer to left-center field for a 3-0 lead. Lindenberg then hit a homer to left for a 4-0 lead.

Earlier, Taipei handed Canada its first loss of the tournament, 3-2. Kristy Odamura, a former University of Hawai'i-Hilo player, was 1 for 3 for Canada.

Greece won its first game of the tournament, defeating Taipei, 2-1

BASEBALL

Obrey signs with St. Louis: Iolani School alum Kainoa Obrey agreed to a professional contract with St. Louis and will report to the Cardinals' A team in New Jersey next week.

Obrey, a redshirt junior at Brigham Young, was drafted in the 13th round (395th pick).

The New Jersey Cardinals play in the New York-Penn League, a short-season (June-September) league consisting of mostly rookie players.

"He received a good package that he is very pleased with; he wouldn't have signed otherwise," according to his mother, Iwalani Dayton, who said he couldn't disclose his signing bonus.

Obrey, a third baseman, sat out last season because of back spasms.

Last year, he was drafted in the 11th round by the Kansas City Royals (318th pick).

WRESTLING

Two in finals: Clarissa Chun and Stephany Lee of Hawai'i last night surged into today's championship matches of USA Wrestling's World Team Trials Challenge Tournament at Indianapolis.

Chun, of Kapolei, a member of the USA National Team last year and No. 1 seed in her 105.5-pound weight division, pinned Hana Askren of Los Angeles in 4 minutes, 39 seconds of her semifinal. Lee, of Salt Lake, won by injury default over Tori Adams of the Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs in her 147.5-pound semifinal.

Today, Chun meets Mary Kelly of Mahomet, Ill., and Lee goes against No. 1-seed Kaci Lyle, another Olympic Training Center resident.

Two other Hawai'i wrestlers were eliminated in the 112-pound division yesterday. Third-seeded Katie Kunimoto of Kane'ohe, an Olympic Training Center resident, lost a semifinal to second-seeded Danielle Hobeika of Princeton, N.J., 3-2.

Debbi Saiki of Mililani, seeded fourth in her first World Team Trials, lost to Cheryl Wong of Boston, Mass., 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Other quarterfinal results yesterday involving Hawai'i wrestlers: Kunimoto won by technical fall over Sarah Bergman of Otsego, Minn., 13-3 in 2:48. Lee pinned Jimi-Dawn Hornbuckle of State College, Pa., in 4:34.

Winners of the Challenge Tournament today will wrestle against current national champions tomorrow for positions on Team USA in the World Championships Sept. 12-14 in New York City.

TRACK AND FIELD

Avegalio eighth: Hawai'i high school discus champion Jerrod Avegalio, a recent Kahuku High graduate, finished eighth in last weekend's adidas Outdoor High School Championships at North Carolina State University.

Avegalio threw 174 feet, 10 inches in his first Mainland competition.

Avegalio's state meet-record throw of 186-0 would have placed second to the winning throw of 192-6.

He has signed a scholarship agreement to attend Arizona.

No finals for Simms: Vera Simms of Mililani missed qualifying for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles at the USA Outdoor Championships yesterday at Stanford, Calif.

Simms finished fifth in her semifinal heat and the first four qualified. Her time was 58.18 seconds, the second fastest of her life. Sandra Glover of Nike led qualifying at 54.75.

Simms will be a senior in the fall at University of Michigan, where she holds the school 400 hurdles record of 58.15 — also a Hawai'i state best — and is a two-time Big Ten champion.

She is the first woman born and raised in Hawai'i to qualify for the USA championships.

VOLLEYBALL

Hawai'i team wins three matches: The Hawai'i All-Stars, an 18-and-under club volleyball team based in Honolulu, won all three of its pool play matches yesterday at the Long Beach Boys Classic national tournament.

The All-Stars' roster includes two-time Advertiser Player of the Year Isaac Kneubuhl of Kamehameha and first-team 2002 All-State players Jarrett Day and Willie Melemai of Kamehameha, Jonathan Charette of Pearl City and Sean Carney of Iolani.

Other team members are Kapena Wong and Kalei Ka'ana'ana of Pearl City, Mike China and Bronson Soares of Punahou, Chad Miller of Iolani and the Academy of the Pacific's Max deWolff.

Pool play continues today.

SWIMMING

Clinics begin: The Waikiki Roughwater Swim Clinics begin today.

The clinics are designed to inform the public about the details of the Waikiki Roughwater Swim on Sept. 1. Classes will include an orientation of the race course, training guidelines including conditioning and mechanics, start and finish strategy, water safety and ocean swimming skills.

The clinics run today and July 26 at San Souci Beach, and Aug. 16 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach, from 8 a.m. to 9:30.

FREE DIVING

Kona's Verbeck third: Kona's Deron Verbeck finished third in his first international free diving competition, earlier this month, at the Sony Freedive Open Classic in Cyprus, Greece.

Martin Stepanek of the Czech Republic was first with 147 points, followed by Carlos Coste of Venezuela with 145.5 and Verbeck with 133.5. A total of 176 divers competed.

According to Verbeck, he set two American records.

In the constant ballast, Verbeck free dived to a predetermined depth of 65 meters (212 feet) and back.

Then, Verbeck held his breath lying face down in a pool for 6 minutes, 51 seconds, in the static apnea.

Verbeck plans to participate in the next United States-hosted free diving event planned for Kona in 2005.
