Leftovers sicken scores of campers

Associated Press

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i — Dozens of young people and adults at a church camp-out on Moloka'i were recovering from food poisoning yesterday after eating leftover spaghetti that had been sitting in the sun.

Sickness was so widespread among members of the Wai'anae Ark of Safety Christian Fellowship that officials said police, fire, ambulance and private vehicles had to be used to transport victims to Moloka'i General Hospital on Friday night.

"They didn't have enough cars to transport the bulk of the people," said police Lt. John Jakubczak.

Some 130 members of the Leeward O'ahu church had been camping on the grounds of the Lamb of God Church and Bible School in Kalama'ula. Hospital officials confirmed that dozens had been treated, and some observers estimated more than 100 campers had been sickened.

The culprit, officials said, was reheated spaghetti that had not been refrigerated.
