Nineteen teams from Hawai'i will try to become the first in state history to win the region IV tournament and advance to nationals when the Snickers 2003 U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Championships start tomorrow at Waipi'o Soccer Complex.

The Hawai'i teams in the 212-team tournament come from 10 clubs. Honolulu Soccer Club has five teams, Mililani Soccer Club and Leahi three each, and Real Hawaii Futbol Club two. Na Koa Soccer Club, Windward Soccer Club, Na Kolohe, Aces, Ho'okalakupua Girls Soccer Academy and Kool Too each has one team.

Six teams will try to defend region titles, and three of those are defending national champions — Pleasanton Rage under-17 girls of Cal. North, ISC Strikers under-17 boys of Cal. South and Colorado Girls Academy under-18 girls.

The other three defending region champions are Sereno '86 Golden Eagles under-16 boys from Arizona, The Slammers under-12 girls from Cal. South and the Classic Bandidos under-18 boys.

Here is a capsule look at the Hawai'i teams:

BOYS

Coach: Bri O'Dowd, six years experience.
Captains: Sweeper Brock Granger, center midfielder Keith Lum.
Players to watch: Defender Reid Sakamoto, midfielder John Cronin.
Road to Regionals: Undefeated in four-team pool play, then won semifinal over Mililani and championship over Na Koa.
Fun Facts: Eight players together since Under 8 ... state champions every year since Under 8 ... first year age group is eligible for regionals ... did not allow a goal in five qualifying matches.
Coach's Comments: "We are going to have to play a very disciplined style of soccer, where all the players have their role and are proud with their role on the team," O'Dowd says. "Our goal as a team is to proudly represent the club and those teams that have represented the state of Hawai'i before us."

Admission to be charged per car for U.S. Cup

Contrary to earlier reports, the U.S. Youth Soccer Association Far West Regionals will charge admission.

The fee will be $5 per car per day, or $20 per car for the whole week, regardless of the number of occupants.

The admission charge will fund aspects of the tournament operations required by the city as a condition of issuing the permit to hold the tournament. These include 24-hour security, including special duty police officers to protect the facility, city equipment, and the crowds.
Na Koa

Coach: Jim Gomez.
Captain: Goalkeeper Anthony Mau, center midfielder Gareth Gomez.

• Fun Facts: Only notified two weeks ago of regional invitation ... hadn't practiced or played a game for three months prior to regional invite (season ends in March) ... will have 11 players available.
Coach's Comments: "Although we knew we were on the wild card list, we didn't think we would be invited to play," Gomez said. "In spite of the circumstances (little practice), we are very excited to play and the players are extremely focused and have been practicing really hard for the past two weeks. Our style is a passing team. We will have to depend on our ballhandling and passing skills to do well. This is the most important event in Hawaii soccer history and our players want to be a part of it."

Coach's Comments: "It's a very skillful team which is capable of either processing the ball for long periods or counter-attacking very quickly," Kemp said. "Lokahi Bounds is one of the most exciting players to watch in Hawai'i, and Kirtis Adams, who is probably one of the most underrated players in Hawai'i, does all the hard work. The team has never won a game at regionals before but this year we expect them to do good things. The team also has a chance to show its depth due to two key players being injured (defender Shane Kutaka and forward P.J. Egloria). For us to do well at the regionals, we have to come together as a team."

Real Hawai'i FC Copa '86

I think overall we have a good team framework that works very well together. I expect us to have a good showing. For the guys to be successful, they just need to focus and do what is necessary to get the result. Over the past year this team has grown to play well together. The guys are really tight and that helps us."

Honolulu SC Bulls '85
Division: Boys Under 18
Coach: Phil Neddo.
Captains: Outsider midfielder Richie Higa, goalkeeper Dave Semenza.

Max Anton and David Gualderama invited with region team to the Colorado Rapids of the MLS training camp ... In last year's regional, beat eventual national champion Irvine Strikers in pool play before losing in quarterfinals to Arizona's Mesa Bayern, 1-0.
Coach's Comments: "We were too fatigued from the pool play last year to win the regionals," Neddo said. "This year we have more players and talent than last year. They have a lot pressure on their shoulders. People realize what this team has done. Duke Hashimoto is one of the most decorated players this state has ever had. I would say David Semenza was our club's most valuable player this year. We have weaknesses that will only be exposed against top level players. Their goal is winning regionals. They won't take anything else. If they make it to the finals and lose it will be a tragedy to them. It would take a lot to explain to them that silver is a big accomplishment. Some of them have been together for many years. If they play as good as they are, they will be playing somebody in the region final."

Coach's Comments: "It's a very talented team with some great young men," Kemp said. "They are capable of playing with the best of them. We play the Classico Bandidos from New Mexico, considered to be the best team in the nation, so we will need to be in our top form if we plan to do anything. In our two main strikers, Shimatsu and (Ricky) Shinn, we have two great players capable of winning any game."

Aces '84
Division: Boys Under 19
Coach: Ernest Eberhart.
Captains: Center midfielder Cary Wong, sweeper Daniel Sanchea.
Players to watch: Defender Colin Yuh, defender Alan Domingo, forward Brent Asato, forward Kevin Lao, midfielder Chris Kaaukuu, defender Evan Kubota, goalkeeper Brandon Puckett, goalkeeper Jay Parsol.

COACH'S Comments: "We have to step up our play to challenge the level of competition that is coming in," Eberhart said. "Hopefully, we can advance to the quarterfinals and take it from there, but it's going to be rough. We will do our best. We just have to run and gun. Height-wise we are at a disadvantage, so we need to use our speed."

"They are all of the highest caliber. We are a very attack-minded team that goes forward at all cost while defending relentlessly. Anson Dorrance, 16-time NCAA champion coach at University of North Carolina, attended a training session in March and was so impressed he accepted them into his prestigious UNC team camp. They are the first U12 team ever accepted."

The kids work extremely hard and the chemistry is just awesome so I am very, very happy that they are able to be playing in the regionals. I think that they are going to represent Hawai'i very well. The girls have great attitudes and I've really, really enjoyed working with this group," said Nagamine.

Coaches Comments: "After all the injuries, we are going to find out what the true character of this team is," says Neddo. "We are in the toughest draw of any team from Hawai'i with Cal. South and Colorado in our group. We lost four would-be starters to ACL tears. We are hoping defenders Madison Perry of Kaua'i and defender Erin Kikumoto come back. Those two teams in our group could make up the national championship. We'll be a speed bump."
