DAVID McCLAIN, dean of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Business Administration, has been named to the board of directors of property and casualty insurer First Insurance Co. of Hawaii. McClain also serves as the First Hawaiian Bank Distinguished Professor of Leadership and Management and as UH interim vice president for research. He is chairman of the board of directors for Hawaii Literacy.

• The Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i has appointed two researchers for its program that takes a social science approach and studies ethnic differences in efforts to prevent or detect cancer. CHERYL LYNN ALBRIGHT and DAVID LESLIE O'RIORDAN have been named researchers for the center's Social and Behavioral Sciences Program. Albright joins the center after 16 years as senior research scientist at the Center for Research in Disease Prevention at Stanford University's School of Medicine. O'Riordan previously served in Australia as research officer with the South West Zonal Public Health Unit at Queensland Health.

NINA ETKIN was named a researcher in the center's Clinical Sciences Program, working to reduce risk factors for cancer. Her career with the University of Hawai'i began in 1990 as a researcher for the Social Science Research Institute and as a faculty member. Since 2002, she has served as graduate chairwoman for the anthropology department.

LEO WANG-KIT CHEUNG was named a biostatistician in the center's Epidemiology Section.

Also appointed: KERRY K. KAKAZU, who rejoins the center as assistant director of operations, following serving as a postdoctoral research fellow there from 1989 to 1991. In the interim, Kakazu served as director of academic computing, and an assistant professor in the biology department, at Chaminade University of Honolulu. He will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility, including building, maintenance and information systems.

• Chef TROY TEROROTUA, former assistant manager and executive chef at Florida's Mai Kai Polynesian Restaurant, on which Honolulu's retro-South Pacific style Tiki's Grill & Bar is modeled, has been named chef de cuisine at the Honolulu property. The 18-year culinary veteran will oversee management of kitchen staff and food production of the 272-seat Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel eatery. Terorotua was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Apprentice Culinary Team in 1993.

• Twenty-seven-year American Savings Bank veteran SHERRI AOYAMA, who rose from junior teller at the Financial Plaza branch in 1976 to a member of the bank's senior executive team since 1997, has been promoted to executive vice president, for workforce excellence and support. She will continue to oversee human resources, technology and the training and development departments, in addition to assuming new responsibilities overseeing operations and marketing and communications. She was most recently senior vice president, employee and technology development.

SUSII HEARST, regional sales manager of KHON-Fox 2, has been elected president of the Hawaii Advertising Federation, an affiliate of the American Advertising Federation. She was previously president of the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters and has been active with Sales and Marketing Executives of Honolulu.

Outgoing president PAGE GAYLORD of Laird Christianson Harris Advertising Inc. was elected vice president of the federation; JANET SCHEFFER, of Mana Means Advertising and Public Relations, is secretary; and SHERI ST. GERMAIN, of Honolulu Publishing, is treasurer.

• University of Hawai'i graduate student JESSICA JACOB has been named publicity director of the university's Kennedy Theatre. Jacob, a veteran of publicity and marketing with the Anchorage (Alaska) Symphony and Anchorage Artists-in-the-Schools program, replaces Kristy Miller.

MARTY BARGER has been named general manager of the Honda Windward dealership in Kane'ohe. Barger was previously general sales manager. Former Honda Windward finance manager JOE MENASIAN was named the dealership's sales manager.

TOM BARLOW has been named president and chief executive officer of Pacific Resources for Education and Learning, the Honolulu-based nonprofit organization providing services to education systems Pacific-wide. Barlow joined PREL in 1996 and has served as chief operating officer since 2000. In his new position, he replaces PREL founder JOHN KOFEL, who has retired. Among company clients are education systems in Hawai'i, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Marianas, Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia. Specialized projects have included video- and audio-conferencing networks linking Hawai'i with other Pacific communities, Web sites to aid early reading literacy, and interactive Web-based learning activities that support classroom reading instruction for culturally diverse English-language learners.

• Communications Pacific, the public relations, advertising, marketing and interactive communications services company, has hired former PRWorks employee GRANT KAWAGUCHI as an assistant account executive in the firm's marketing communications group; and recent University of Hawai'i graduate MELISSA KAMEI as an account coordinator in its corporate communications practice. Kamei is a former intern at the firm and also was a public relations intern at the Sheraton Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian hotels.
