Passenger dies in one-car crash

One Kalaeloa man was killed and another seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash late Saturday night on Roosevelt Road.

Police said the accident occurred at around 11:20 p.m. The 20-year-old driver lost control of his car, which crashed through a locked gate, swerved off the road and hit a canal wall.

The impact ejected the 20-year-old passenger from the car, and he died at the scene.

The driver was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he is listed in guarded condition.


EAST HONOLULU

Free lectures at Hanauma Bay

The Hanauma Bay Education Program has a series of free lectures planned through this month and next.

The lectures are slated from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the nature preserve. The schedule:

  • Thursday, Gary Karr of the Oceanic Institute will talk about aquaculture and the ongoing research at the institute.
  • July 10, Rick Barboza of Hui Ku Maoli Ola will speak on native coastal plants of southeast O'ahu.
  • July 24, John Rooney of the University of Hawai'i- Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science will discuss beach erosion.

Kahala Mall to host annual fair

Kahala Mall's seventh annual Funtastik Keiki Fair is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Proceeds from scrip sales used to pay for games will support Read To Me International, a Hawai'i-based nonprofit literacy organization.

In addition to games, the event will feature music, arts and crafts, balloons, magic by Carlos da Silva II, and storytelling. The fair is sponsored by Jamba Juice.

Tasters choose Canoes as best

Canoes at the Renaissance Ilikai in Waikiki was the people's primary taste choice at the 12th annual Taste of Honolulu.

The restaurant earned best of taste awards in the seafood, salad and dessert categories. Close behind the Ilikai was Tony Roma's for best poultry and best pork.

Other taste contenders were the Colony at Hyatt Regency Waikiki for best beef, Ciao Mein at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki for best pasta, and Down to Earth for best vegetarian dish. Tiki's Grill and Bar was named the most spirited crew, and Auntie Pasto's earned praise for the best decorated booth.


NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Man drowns on Big Island

A 56-year-old tourist died yesterday after an apparent drowning on the Big Island. Paramedics found the man on a beach in Pololu Valley, where bystanders who had pulled him from the water were attempting cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

The man was taken to Kohala Hospital, where he died.
