Sixty-one people have been killed to date this year on Hawai'i's roadways, eight more than by this date last year.

O'ahu leads the way, with 37 traffic deaths. As of Saturday night, when 20-year-old Nicholas Lopez was killed in a one-car crash at Kalaeloa, the O'ahu death count for 2003 was up by seven from the previous year.

Kaua'i, Maui and Hawaii counties' totals are on about the same pace as last year.

Maui's total of seven, which includes two fatalities on Moloka'i and five on the Valley Island, is one more than last year, while the Big Island and Kaua'i, with 14 and three fatalities, respectively, are even with last year's pace.

All together, there were 120 traffic deaths in Hawai'i in 2002 68 on O'ahu, 28 on the Big Island, 20 on Maui and four on Kaua'i.
