HONOLULU

200 stung by box jellyfish

About 200 beachgoers were stung yesterday by jellyfish in waters off Waikiki, county lifeguards said.

Lifeguards said the box jellyfish invasion is one of the largest in the past couple years. About 2,700 jellyfish were counted at Waikiki beaches, and about 80 were discovered at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Jellyfish warning signs will stay up through tomorrow, officials said.

One tourist had an allergic reaction after being stung and was taken to a hospital.


Bidding reopens for taxi service

The state Transportation Department is reopening the bidding process for a company to run the taxi management concession at Honolulu International Airport.

DOT spokesman Scott Ishikawa said yesterday the new request for proposals will allow Mainland as well as Hawai'i firms to bid for the concession.

The previous bid announcement barred companies that had not been in business in Hawai'i for two years from applying for the concession.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Use Windward water sparingly

The Board of Water Supply is asking Windward O'ahu residents to limit water use to essential needs until this afternoon, when crews are expected to complete work on a major valve for the Punalu'u transmission main on Green Valley Road.

The main supplies water from Punalu'u to Waimanalo. The Kane'ohe-bound lane of Kamehameha Highway near the Kaya Store has been closed for the work.

ATV accident proves fatal

WAIMEA, Hawai'i — A 51-year-old Big Island man injured June 14 while riding an all-terrain vehicle died

Friday at The Queen's Medical Center on O'ahu. Police said Allen Catrett was riding the ATV on his Maliu Ridge property in North Kohala when he was unable to make a turn around a tree and struck a wooden utility post.


Drowning victim identified

WAIMEA, Hawai'i — A 51-year-old man who died after he was found unconscious in the ocean Sunday off Pololu Valley in North Kohala was identified as Kurt Edward Maki of Buena Park, Calif. Police are still investigating the cause of death.


Man bitten by shark off atoll

A 51-year-old man suffered leg injuries from a shark attack Sunday while swimming off Johnston Atoll. George Fahey, who works on the atoll, was bitten on the left leg, the Coast Guard said.

A C-130 Hercules airplane from Barbers Point brought the man to Honolulu, where he was listed in stable condition at The Queen's Medical Center.
