Lion dancers from Lung Kong Physical Culture Club participated in the blessing of three dragon boats at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The ceremony was a prelude to the eight annual AT&T Dragon Boat Festival to be held Aug. 9-10 at Ala Moana Beach Park. The Japanese rock band TUBE gave a free concert at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider's Banyan Courtyard to an audience consisting mostly of Japan tourists. TUBE performed to help bolster the state's tourism industry and said it will donate $5,000 to Easter Seals Hawaii. See story.

At Jefferson Elementary School in Waikiki, it was "Sprinkler Day" when the water was turned on for the annual beat-the-heat event. Principal Vivian Hee, who emphasized that the school staff supports water conservation, said the grass went without irrigation for a few days so the youngsters could splash and splurge.
