Michael Loui named scholar

Michael Loui, a Punahou School graduate and professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been named a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Loui was one of 26 university faculty members from across the country selected for the award.


Hanapepe job wins award

The Historic Hawai'i Foundation has selected the Hanapepe Pool Hall Project to receive a Preservation Honor Award.

The project, spearheaded by Banana Patch Studio owner Joanna Carolan, is an effort to restore the building to its original appearance. A grand opening is planned for this summer.

60 preschools raise $40,000

From January through April, more than 60 preschools throughout the state raised over $40,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through the organization's Hop-A-Thon.

MDA is a voluntary health agency battling more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and professional and public health education.


Hawai'i Theatre appoints Evans

The Hawai'i Theatre Center has named Elaine Evans director of development, with responsibilities for annual fund raising and special events.

Evans, a Punahou School and Hollins College graduate, is a longtime ad executive who most recently worked for Media Matters.
