Toyama tops at qualifying event

Travis Toyama, an incoming senior at University High, shot a 1-under-par 71 at Po'ipu Bay Resort yesterday to clinch a berth in the 56th USGA Junior Amateur Championships.

Toyama led the qualifier with a 6-under 138 total.

Skip Murphy of Kiawah Island, S.C., shot 71—140 to earn the other berth in the national tournament, which will be held at Chevy Chase, Md., on July 21-26.

The four alternates are all from Hawai'i. They are, in order following tie-breakers: Bryan Bangerter (145), Cory French (145), Kurt Nino (146) and Casey Kobashigawa (146).
