Alaska beats Hawai'i with no-hitter, 5-1

Anton Maxwell pitched a no-hitter and struck out 16 as Alaska defeated Hawai'i, 5-1, yesterday in the opener of the Best of the West Baseball Classic at Central O'ahu Regional Park in Waipi'o.

All four teams from Hawai'i lost their openers.

In other games, California beat Kailua, 3-2, Arizona beat the Hammahedz, 6-5, and North Carolina beat Leeward, 3-2.

Pool play continues today with doubleheaders starting at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.



KICKBOXING

• Steele to fight: Honolulu's Danny Steele, a two-time International Kickboxing Federation world champion, will fight Jason Bress of Orange County, Calif., in the main event of a kickboxing card Friday at the Blaisdell Arena.

Wai'anae's Rodney Joseph will face Dan Erickson of Stonelake, Wash., in an undercard match.

The first bout is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m..

Tickets are $50 ringside, $30 risers and $25 loges. For more information, call Adrian Silva at 216-4241.



SWIMMING

• Rainbows to Korea: University of Hawai'i swimmers Tudor Ignat and Nimrod Palma and diver Maggie Roberts will participate in the 22nd Universiade in Daegu, South Korea, Aug. 21-31.

Ignat, a junior, will represent Romania. He is on the UH all-time lists for the 100-yard breaststroke (second), 200 breaststroke (third), 200 individual medley (fourth) and 100 butterfly (sixth).

Palma, a junior, will represent Israel. He swam the 100 (seventh on UH all-time list) and 200 butterfly (fifth) for the Rainbows.

Roberts, a junior, will be on the Australia team. She is the two-time Western Athletic Conference Diver of the Year.

The Summer Universiade features competition in 13 sports.
