Man charged in attack with bat

Kaleokalani Yamada, 20, of Halawa, was charged yesterday in connection with a Valentine's Day robbery at the Diamond Head Lookout in which two 22-year-old men were attacked with a baseball bat.

Yamada is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery. He was released after posting $100,000 bail.

Yamada also is charged with the March 21 armed robbery of two tourists from Japan at the Honolulu Zoo. An aluminum bat was used in that robbery, which involved theft of a car. He posted $50,000 bail in that case.

A police affidavit on the Diamond Head case, filed in District Court, said Yamada struck both men on the head with the bat, knocking one of them unconscious. He allegedly struck one of the victims after the man met his demand for money by giving Yamada $7.

A 71-year-old Kane'ohe woman was injured today when her 1992 Toyota Corolla station wagon crashed into a guardrail on Likelike Highway near the Burmeister overpass.

Police said a heart attack may have caused the 12:05 a.m. crash. The woman was in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center for medical problems not related to the accident, police said.

Water main breaks again on Pohukaina

Board of Water Supply crews were repairing a water-main break today on Pohukaina Street between South and Punchbowl streets near the entrance to Restaurant Row.

The break, which occurred at 5:20 a.m., came after crews were finishing up repair work on an eight-inch main break at the same location that was reported at 9:43 p.m. yesterday.

The second break did not close Pohukaina Street to traffic.
