Kamehameha sued over policy

The Kamehameha Schools' renewed Hawaiians-only admission policy is being challenged as a civil rights violation under a lawsuit filed yesterday in U.S. District Court.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of an unidentified non-Hawaiian student, says that federal civil rights laws prohibit private schools from denying admission on the basis of race.

The suit was filed by Big Island attorney John Goemans and Eric Grant of a Sacramento, Calif., law firm.

Three years ago, Goemans' constitutional challenge of Hawaiians-only voting for trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Police identify man hit by car

Big Island police yesterday released the name of a 28-year-old man who died April 29 after being hit by a car allegedly driven by a woman with whom he was arguing.

The identity of Alejandro Dorado Jimenez was not confirmed until earlier this month when family members arrived from Mexico, police said.

Kuulei Haunani Leith-Ellen Lewis, 32, of Makapala, North Kohala, has been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident in connection with Jimenez's death. She is accused of driving her 1995 Honda Passport into Jimenez, causing him to strike his head on the ground on Pratt Road in the Halawa area of North Kohala.
