Three former UH players in match-play semifinals

Advertiser Staff

Three former Rainbow Wahine golfers and Kamehameha Schools junior Mari Chun will play in today's semifinals of the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship.

Former match play champions Bev Kim and Bobbi Kokx tee off at 8 a.m., followed by Chun and Bobbie Arakawa at Oahu Country Club.

In yesterday's closest match, Arakawa, the only senior on the University of Hawai'i team last season, edged Mona Kim, 1-up. Kim has won the past three State Senior Championships.

Kim was 3-down at the turn, but birdied the 10th and 15th to cut her deficit to one. Both had their third birdie of the day to halve the 16th and Kim tied the match with par on the next hole.

Arakawa's approach was long at the 18th, but she won the match with a 15-foot putt when Kim failed to get up and down for par.

Bev Kim, a UH graduate who won this tournament in 1971, '72 and '96, defeated Marcie Rudich, 8 and 7. Kokx, the defending champion and former UH player and coach, beat Ayaka Kaneko, 7 and 6. Chun, 15, ousted 1999 champion Mahina Ah Yuen, 6 and 4.

The final will be held at 7 a.m. tomorrow.
