The Buzz

Hoobastank and No Bare Feet rock Pipeline Sunday

Still don't know what the heck Hoobastank means? Don't worry, the band doesn't have a clue either. Said Hoobastank lead singer Doug Robb last year, "I love Jamiroquai, but I don't go diving into what it means." Fair enough, Doug. Spawned in the suburbs of L.A., Hoobastank's brand of rock offers hints of post-millennial punk with a melodic pulse. Local rock stations played the heck out of the band's "Crawling In The Dark" single last year, we think. Might've been Incubus. Opening for the 'Stank will be local pop punk quintet No Bare Feet, who've been digging into O'ahu's club scene quite a bit this month. Sunday at Pipeline Café, 7 p.m. Tickets are $17.50 pre-sale, $20 on show day. 589-1999.

A fiery tale of Pele and her sister

The Greeks weren't the only ones who witnessed a battle of the Titans. Hawaiian legends relate many stories of fire goddess Pele tangling with her divine siblings, and this weekend Honolulu Dance Theatre will tell one of them on the Hawai'i Theatre stage. "Legend of Pele and other Works," a mixed repertoire of dance productions choreographed by Matthew Wright, features this clash between Pele (Celia Chun) and her sister, the ocean goddess Namakaokaha'i (here, Pele flees from the water bearers attempting to extinguish her fires). "Legend" uses Hawaiian motifs in costuming and choreography to interpret the story through western dance styles. Also on the playbill: "Dreamscapes," an abstract depiction of the development of life; and "Let's Dance," an homage to a ballet dancer's training. Performances are 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $24, $20 and $16, with a $4 discount for seniors, students, and military. 528-0506.
