Escapee gets 40-year term

One of two female inmates who escaped from the O'ahu Community Correctional Center in April was sentenced in Circuit Court Wednesday to 40 years in prison for escape and a variety of other charges.

Kimberly Takata, 33, earlier pleaded no contest to escape, fraudulent use of a credit card, forgery, theft and identity theft. Takata and another inmate slipped out of a holding area at the jail and were captured separately three days later. Circuit Judge Marie Milks imposed the sentence.



Workshop helps Hawaiian youth

Pacific American Foundation is offering a free workshop to help Native Hawaiian high school students focus their educational interests and develop their special talents through a mentoring program.

The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Windward Community College and includes activities in health, engineering, ethnobotany, marine biology, radio and television, and a 3-D tour in the Imaginarium. Free lunch will be provided.

New numbers at water board

The Board of Water Supply has established a new phone system, and all of its numbers have been changed. The main number is 748-5000. For water emergencies, call 748-5010. For general water information, conservation questions or water waste complaints, call 748-5041.



Board releases election results

The Ala Moana/Kaka'ako Neighborhood Board re-elected John Breinich chairman at its Tuesday meeting. Joyce Kurtz was elected vice chairwoman, Dyane Sih secretary and Betty Carter treasurer. Following the neighborhood board elections this year, the Ala Moana board had four of nine seats vacant because there were not enough candidates, making it difficult to reach a quorum. Three former board members — Kurtz, Sih and Carter — were convinced to return, leaving only one seat vacant.



Volunteers to clean stream

A group of volunteers from the marketing company Belt Collins Hawai'i will clean Kalihi Stream for the second time in two months after more trash and debris has been dumped into the waterway. The workers will return to the stream at 9 a.m. tomorrow and will use a hoist to lift trash from the water. For more information, call Mark Tawara at 521-5361.



Save the Trees group to meet

A group called Save the Trees will hold an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at 2230 Kamehameha Ave. in Manoa. The group's goals include encouraging planting trees, saving trees and exploring other means of preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Manoa Valley. For more information, call 944-1400.
