Fishing series kicks off with Kona Classic event

The Maui Jim Hawai'i Marlin Tournament Series opens today with the Kona Classic.

Registration for the Kona Classic and a captain's meeting will be tonight at 6 at the Hawai'i Big Game Fish Club at Nonokohau Harbor. Fishing will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

Anglers will vie for a purse up to $50,000 and can win prizes for catching ahi, ono, mahi mahi and marlin.

The Maui Jim Hawai'i Marlin Tournament Series includes seven qualifying events:

• Firecracker Tournament, July 5-6.
• Skins Marlin Derby, July 11-13.
• Lahaina Jackpot, July 25-27
• Big Island Marlin Tournament, Aug. 7-9.
• Ho'ole'a Tournament, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
• Okoe Bay Rendezvous, Sept. 5-7.

ADD FISHING

Nu'uanu applications: Applications to fish for catfish at Nu'uanu Reservoir No. 4 will be available Tuesday through July 18.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will open the reservoir to anglers on Aug. 9 for weekend fishing until all persons with assigned fishing times have been accommodated.

Anglers must obtain a State of Hawai'i freshwater game fishing license and entry fishing card. The entry cards will indicate a time and date that people may fish the reservoir.

Entry card applications will be available at the Department of Land and Natural Resource's visitor and permit counter at 1151 Punchbowl St., room 131.

GYMNASTICS

• Exhibition scheduled: Athletes from Hawai'i that will be competing in the national USA Gymnastics meet in July will hold a free exhibition tomorrow at Hawai'i Academy's Aloha Gym at 1314 Mo'onui St. at 6 p.m.

The 14 athletes will be competing in the Sacramento, Calif., event (July 13-21) in the trampoline, double-mini trampoline and tumbling.

The athletes are: Tiare Bolongan (Mililani Middle School); Paige Castillo (Waikele Elementary); Chelaine Eliazar (St. Andrew's Priory); Spencer Madanay (Punahou); Drew McPhillips (Moanalua Middle School); Kathleen McPhillips (Webling Elementary); Rory McPhillips (Webling Elementary); Matt Moniz ('Aiea High School); Kelsen Onigama (Our Redeemer Lutheran); Keisha Padello (Manana Elementary); Sarah Steele (Punahou); Laneika Tagavilla (Kapolei High School); Kira Vercruyssen (Kaiser High School); and Nani Vercruyssen (Hokulani Elementary).



RUNNING

• Mango Days 5K Sunday: More than 200 runners are expected to participate in Sunday's Mango Days 5K, a fund-raiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at Ala Moana Park.

The run starts at 6:30 a.m.

The run was named after the "Mango Days" book written by Patty Smith. In the book, Smith wrote about the experience with the disease that eventually took her life in 1981. Race organizer Neil Voje read the book last fall and was inspired to coordinate the run. Voje has participated in fund-raisers for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and previously organized a charity run on the Mainland.

Entry fee is $23. Packet pickup will be tomorrow at Niketown from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 488-1391.



VOLLEYBALL

Beach tourney set for Big Island: Summer Jam Tourney, a four-person beach volleyball tournament, will be July 3-6 at the Coconut Grove Marketplace and Keauhou Harbor Beach courts on the Big Island.

There will be three divisions: women, men and reverse coed. Cost is $150 per four-person team, with $25 for additional players.
