Hawai'i may see new cargo ship

A California shipping company has secured a lease for a shipyard in Olympia, Wash., to build a container vessel to ply Hawai'i waters. Santa Maria Shipping L.L.C. of Santa Rosa, Calif. plans to apply for a loan guarantee from the Maritime Administration in about two weeks to build a ship for $15 million to $20 million.



Abercrombie to visit Pearl site

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie will visit Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on Monday to address dockworkers repairing Matson Navigation Co.'s S.S. Matsonia cargo ship, which broke down 700 miles east of Honolulu. He plans to observe teamwork between Pacific Shipyard International and the Navy, which brought the Matsonia to Hawai'i for repairs.



Hawaiian OK'd to land in Apia

The island nation of Samoa has given Hawaiian Airlines temporary permission to operate in and out of the capital of Apia until poor runway conditions at Pago Pago International Airport are repaired, Lt. Gov. Aitofele Sunia said.

The carrier announced Tuesday that it was suspending weekly service between Honolulu and American Samoa. Hawaiian blamed the Pago Pago runways for damaging two aircraft.
