FAITH BRIEFS
Institute offers theology credits

Advertiser Staff

More than 330 people attended special classes held on the Damien High School campus last week as part of the Catechetical and Pastoral Institute, a program sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu that offers continuing education for Sunday school teachers and parish religious educators.

The participants — mostly lay people but some nuns and priests — earned credits for taking theology courses such as "Christian Morality" and "Social Mission of the Church."

Electives were also available, such as "Singing Hands: The Birth of a Signing Choir," "Intro to 20th Century Spiritual Writers" (such as Thomas Merton and Edith Stein) and "Liturgical Music."

While the institute's O'ahu phase, with 28 classes taught by 27 teachers, has been completed, a smaller program will be held July 14-17 on Kaua'i. A Maui program was held earlier this month.

Worship, arts on the agenda

"Led by the Spirit," a three-day conference on worship and the arts, will be held Aug. 8-10 at Nu'uanu Congregational Church.

Using a $15,631 grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship in Grand Rapids, Mich., with with money provided by the Lilly Endowment Inc., the conference will feature Marty Haugen as keynote speaker and musician Joe Camacho.

Haugen is a liturgical composer, workshop presenter and author from Minnesota. Camacho is a musician from Hilo.

There will also be an opening worship with several language choirs, as well as 15 workshops, said the Rev. Tom Fujita, senior pastor at Nu'uanu Congregational.
