Man dead, child critical after crash

A man was killed and a child critically injured after an accident last night near 87-2070 Farrington Highway and Lualualei Naval Road in Nanakuli.

Details were sketchy at press time.

The accident, which backed up traffic for miles, occurred at about 8 p.m. yesterday and may have involved a car and a truck, said Jason Kaneshiro, a district supervisor with Emergency Medical Services.

The child was taken to Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Kaneshiro said.

Police closed all west-bound lanes to conduct an investigation. Traffic, which was backed up at least 10 miles, was contra-flowed onto the shoulder lane.

At midnight, west-bound traffic was slowed to a crawl at the Ko Olina exit.

Terry Liana, a heavy-equipment operator from Wai'anae, had pulled over at the Kahe Point power plant, waiting for the traffic jam to ease up before continuing his journey home from work. He had been waiting for an hour.

"They have to do something about this. How many times, the traffic out here, water line broke, the telephone lines down. ... Every time, something happens. We're stranded. We gotta wait on the side like this for couple hours."
