Asao brothers lead way in Presidents Cup golf

Manoa Cup champion Kellen-Floyd Asao shot a 2-over-par 74 yesterday, but hung on to a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Presidents Cup at Pearl Country Club.

Asao is at 1-under 143 heading into today's final round.

One shot behind is Asao's older brother, Norman-Ganin, who shot a 70, and 2003 Waiakea High graduate Gabriel Wilson. Wilson shared the first-round lead with with Kellen-Floyd Asao, but struggled to a 75 yesterday.


ACADEMIC HONORS

• UH swimmers, divers: Six University of Hawai'i athletes from swimming and diving teams have been named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-America teams for the spring semester.

Three made the first team, while the others were honorable-mention selections.

First-team honorees are Ying Juan Zhen, a junior swimmer from China, with a 3.82 GPA; Cheyne Bloch, a junior swimmer from Maui, with a 3.60 GPA, and Mike Gowdy, a junior diver from London, with a 3.60 GPA.

Kurt Boehm (4.00 GPA), a junior swimmer from Erlangen, Germany, and siblings Andrew Affleck (4.00 GPA) and Jessica Affleck (3.50 GPA) from Townsville, Australia, were honorable mention.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Metzger-Wong team ousted: Brazil's Ricardo Alex Santos and Emanuel Rego defeated Stein Metzger and Scott Wong of the United States, 21-18, 16-21, 15-9, in the round of 16's at the SWATCH-FIVA Beach Volleyball World Tour tournament in Berlin.

Metzger and Wong, both Punahou and UCLA alums, finished tied for ninth place with the U.S. team of Todd Rogers and Sean Scott.

Santos and Rego then defeated the American team of Dax Holdren and Eric Fonoimoana, 21-16, 21-13, to advance to today's semifinals against compatriots Franco Jose Neto and Harley Marques Silva.



BODYBUILDING

• Faust is tops overall: Daren Faust took the open overall title of the 25th Annual Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding Championships last night at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Faust, a light heavyweight, won the overall final against the winners of the other weight classes.

Amanda Deck Ashburn won the fitness contest and Michelle Dragaron won the overall figure contest in the women's competition.

Winners and runners-up for each weight class earn invitations to the national competition.

Detailed coverage of the event will appear in tomorrow's Advertiser.

Other weight-class winners:

Dillon Ching (bantamweight), Rodney Cabatu (lightweight), Cyp Ugale (middleweight), Kelii Akana (heavyweight), and Ausage Emosi (super heavyweight).



MEETING

QB Club's guests: Artie Wilson, television color commentator for University of Hawai'i men's basketball, and former UH linebacker Chris Brown will be among the guest speakers at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Other scheduled guests are body builder Kristi Tauti and ESPN's Neal Everett, a former sportscaster for KGMB-TV.

The luncheon-meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel, and the public is invited.



SOCCER

Vaiete's Stefanov selected: Iovo Stefanov of the Vaiete Soccer Club Hawai'i and the Hawai'i Soccer Association has been selected to represent the Region IV team at the USASA National Camp in Houston starting July 28.

He will be playing against the U.S. National U-21 Team, Honduras National Team and various MLS teams.

During the USASA National Camp, Stefanov will be evaluated by coaches for a chance to play at the next level.
