A teenager accused of shooting a Punchbowl man Thursday inside his Puowaina Drive home was described today by a relative as a troubled youth.

"He just came back from (American) Samoa three months ago but he get in trouble lots of times," Elisapeta Maposua said of her brother's son, 17-year-old Miti Maugaotega Jr., who was adopted by her parents after her brother got divorced. "He stealing money even from my mother."

The Honolulu Prosecutor's Office has petitioned Family Court to waive its jurisdiction over Maugaotega so he can be tried as an adult on charges of attempted murder, burglary, robbery and for three firearm and two drug offenses. A hearing to set a date for the waiver petition hearing will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. before Senior Family Court Judge Frances Q.F. Wong.

Maugaotega is no stranger to Hale Ho'omalu, the juvenile detention facility on Alder Street where he has been held since his arrest Thursday, Maposua said. "He was here before when he was in trouble for stealing," she said. "They sent him back to Samoa two or three years ago."

Maposua said Maugaotega lives with her mother and does not attend school.

Maugaotega allegedly shot 43-year-old Eric Kawamoto after Kawamoto came home from work at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday and interrupted a burglary.

Kawamoto, who is in guarded condition at The Queen's Medical Center, was shot in the chest with a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol which was recovered by police.
