State allots half-hour free parking at airports

Advertiser Staff

Beginning tomorrow, Hawai'i residents will be allowed to park for free for the first 30 minutes when they drop off people at state airports that charge for parking, the governor's office announced today.

The change will be done as a six-month test.

The idea is to give residents time for extended goodbyes. After the 9-11 terrorist attacks, security at airports was tightened, making it difficult for Hawai'i residents accustomed to lengthy, lei-draping farewells at curbside.

Before the change, drivers were charged $1 for the first half-hour. Under the new plan, drivers will be charged $1 for each extra hour or fraction of an hour.
