Sophomore wins writing contest

Moanalua High School sophomore Peter Chung has been awarded a $1,000 first-place scholarship by the International Arts Foundation for its inaugural IAF writing contest. Chung also won a $200 donation for his class. Kamehameha Schools senior Evan Price won the $500 second-place scholarship and a $100 cash donation for his class.


Design Awards presented

The American Institute of Architects Honolulu Chapter announced the winners of its 2003 Design Awards. Two projects were presented the Award of Excellence: Robert G. Nespor's "Kohala Coast Residence" project and John Peacock Tatom's "Residential Compound on a Private Island." The award is the highest level of recognition in the Institute.

In addition, the Award of Merit, recognizing projects displaying a high standard of architectural quality and design, were presented to the following projects: "Christ United Methodist Church," Spencer Architects; "Dower Realty Offices," William A. Gulstrom; "Hanauma Bay Marine Education Center," Group 70 International; "Hawai'i Hall: University of Hawai'i-Manoa," Architects Hawai'i Ltd.; "Lanikai Beach Grand Cottage," Peter Vincent and Associates; "Maunalua Bay Estate," Peter Vincent and Associates; "Myron 'Pinky' Thompson Canoe Halau," Bill Chang Architects; "Spago at Four Seasons Resort Maui," Garduque Architects; and "A Waialae Residence," Jeffrey Nishi and Associates/Architects.


La Pietra student awarded $3,500

Molly Tafoya of La Pietra-Hawai'i School for Girls has been awarded a $3,500 Hawaii Youth Rotary Scholarship. Tafoya, student council president and winner of the Joseph H. Pynchon Headmaster's Award, will attend Georgetown University in the fall.


Five women receive scholarships

The American Association of University Women-Windward O'ahu Branch gave scholarships to five women pursuing degrees. Joann Aiu received a $1,000 Professor Josephine Mitchell grant to continue her studies in forensic science at Chaminade University of Honolulu. A Susan B. Anthony scholarship for $1,000 was awarded to Rosannah Cannell to attend Leeward Community College.

Jessica May and Michelle O'Phelan each received grants of $500 to attend Windward Community College. Tiare Fonoimoana received a $500 grant to attend Heald College.

The AAUW-Windward Branch also honored charter member Mary Conniff, who was instrumental in obtaining money for the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship.

AAUW represents 150,000 women in 1,500 communities and is the nation's leading advocate for education and equity for women and girls.


HPU recognizes five professors

Hawai'i Pacific University has announced the winners of the 2003 Golden Apple Awards program which recognizes outstanding professors for their significant contributions to HPU as teachers and scholars. They are:

  • Ken Schoolland, distinguished teaching
  • Dr. Russell Hart, excellence in scholarship
  • Melvin Masuda, excellence in mentoring
  • Dr. Mark Lane, reflective use of technology
  • Jeanine Tweedie, excellence in service learning
