Elder Asao wins Presidents Cup

Norman-Ganin Asao beat younger brother Kellen-Floyd in a playoff yesterday to win the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Pearl Country Club.

Norman-Ganin shot a final-round 1-under-par 71 to tie his brother at 1-under 215.


BASEBALL

• Western California is Best: Tournament MVP Zack Kalter was the winning pitcher as Western California defeated North Carolina, 6-0, yesterday to win the 11th Annual Best of the West Classic at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Kalter struck out 26 in two games and batted .600 for the tournament.

In other games yesterday, Scottsdale, Ariz., defeated the Hammahedz, 10-8, for third place and Alaska beat Leeward, 6-5, for fifth.

Keoni Ruth, a 2003 Kamehameha Schools graduate, was named Most Outstanding Hitter after batting .636 with nine RBIs and seven runs scored.

Alaska's Anton Maxwell was chosen Outstanding Pitcher after recording 26 strikeouts and yielding just three hits in two games.
