Center event to honor girls

Advertiser Staff

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii will sponsor its annual Girls' Day celebration with a mix of Japanese and Western traditions from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the center, 2454 S. Beretania St.

"Hina Matsuri — A Taste of the East and West" will include kimono dressing, a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and English-style tea party, children's arts and crafts, and Japanese doll displays, music and entertainment.

Some of the activities are free, but two require a fee and registration:

  • Professional dressers will outfit girls of all ages in kimono in the center's dojo; those who register by today will pay $65. The fee, which goes up to $75 for late registration, includes two keepsake photos. Appointments of 15 minutes will be assigned between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
  • The English tea will cost $20 for adults or $12 for children under 12 who register by today; admission at the door is $23 and $15.

March 3 is the annual Hina Matsuri (Girls' Day) observance in Japan. Traditions include an elaborate display of dolls in ancient costumes.
