FAITH BRIEFS
UCC minister to give lectures

The Rev. Adora Iris Lee, a minister of the United Church of Christ who serves in the UCC's Washington, D.C., Public Life and Social Policy Office as director of environmental justice programs, will give the third annual Umematsu and Yasu Watada Lectures. "Environmental Justice Challenges for the 21st Century: How Can People of Faith Respond?" is the title of her lecture at 7 p.m. March 10 at the Church of the Crossroads.

At 6 p.m. March 12, Lee will speak at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa on "The Role Played by Youth and Students in the Emerging Global Environmental Justice Movement." She will also give the sermon at the Church of the Crossroads' March 9 service.

Prayer day event scheduled

The World Day of Prayer, an international event sponsored by Church Women United, will host a local event at 4 p.m. March 9, the day set aside to bring informed prayer and prayerful action to the community. The local event will be at Parke Chapel at St. Andrew's Cathedral.

For information, call Janet Harada, 737-2656.

Teens to help fight hunger

Olivet Baptist Church's teen group will participate in the World Vision's 30-Hour Famine this weekend, helping to raise money to fight hunger in Ethiopia, Zambia, Peru and elsewhere.

The students are among those taking part in the national fund-raising effort, said Olivet Baptist youth minister Arjay Gruspe. For 30 hours, the teens will only take liquids as they work with the homeless at beaches and at the Institute for Human Services' women and family shelter. For information, call the church, 946-6505.

Guild offers scholarships

The Hawai'i Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is offering scholarships to pay half the cost of organ lessons for a year to potential church organists. Hawai'i residents interested in learning to play the organ for churches, weddings and funerals who are not already members of the guild are eligible; however, the winners' organ teachers must be guild members.

For information, call Ruth Urben, 623-5140.
