Iolani's Sun sets record in 200 individual medley

Advertiser Staff

Iolani's Hongzhe Sun, bidding to write an unforgettable final chapter to his sensational high school career, set his third state meet record yesterday during qualification heats at Duke Kahanamoku pool.

Sun entered the 200-yard individual medley for the first time in state high school competition and smashed the existing record by almost 3 1/2 seconds with a time of 1 minute, 50.35 seconds.

He also led qualifiers in the 100 backstroke, considered his strongest event, in which he set the meet record of 49.95 two years ago.

Finals and consolation finals of the 46th annual Hawai'i High School Athletic Association championships, sponsored by Local Motion, will start at 1 p.m. today at the UH pool. Diving semifinals and finals will start at 8:30 a.m.

Sun was the only record setter in yesterday's 142 trial heats, but teammate Mark Eckert Jr. was 46/100ths of a second off his own record in the 200 freestyle and Maui's Chelsea Nagata got close to two of the meet's most revered girls records.

Nagata and Kapolei freshman Meredith Egloria led girls 50-yard freestyle qualifiers in 23.88 and 23.90 seconds, about a half-second away from the meet record of 23.26 set nine years ago by Mililani's Keiko Price, later a four-year All-American at UCLA.

And Nagata returned two events later to lead 100 butterfly qualifying in 55.78 — 57/100ths off the HHSAA's oldest girls record of 55.21, set by Punahou's Kathy Shipman in 1979.

Egloria also led 100 freestyle qualifiers.

Two-event fastest qualifiers in boys were Sun, Eckert (200 and 500 freestyle), and Seabury Hall's Randall Tom (50 freestyle and 100 butterfly).

With seven fastest qualifying times in 12 events, Iolani's boys appeared poised to win their second straight state championship.

Defending champion Waiakea, Iolani and Punahou figure to fight to the final relay, as they did last year, for the girls championship.

One of the best races today might be the girls 500 freesytle, which is 20 laps of the 25-yard pool. Yesterday, in separate heats, Leilehua's Leslie Christian, Kalaheo's Christine Phillips and Waiakea's Marlene Yafuso had times within 4/10th of a second.
