Crash victim on Maui identified

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — Police have identified an 81-year-old visitor from California who was killed Thursday night when the Buick sedan in which she was riding crashed into an 18-wheel tractor-trailer that had stopped to make a turn off Kuihelani Highway onto Waiko Road.

Jean Funkhouser died at the scene, police said, while her husband, Lawrence Funkhouser, 81, who was driving, was in guarded condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said the Buick deflected off the trailer and collided with a van carrying four visitors from California. An adult female passenger in the van was treated at the hospital and released; no one else in the van was injured.

The 6:55 p.m. crash shut down the highway for several hours. It was Maui County's third traffic fatality this year compared with two at the same time last year.
