Iolani alum Tokoro scores career-high 49

Monica Tokoro of Cal State Los Angeles followed a 41-point performance Friday night, with 49 points last night in a 97-93 women's basketball loss to Cal State Stanislaus at Los Angeles.

Tokoro, an Iolani alum, was 18 of 34 from the field, hitting 1 of 2 3-pointers last night. The 49 points is a California Collegiate Athletic Association record and a career high for the sophomore.

On Friday, CSULA lost to Cal State Bakersfield, 91-72.

Tokoro, a 5-foot-3 guard, has 1,014 points in two seasons with two games remaining this season.

CSULA, an NCAA Division II school, is 7-18 overall and 5-15 in the conference.



SWIMMING

• UH sweeps awards: University of Hawai'i junior Cheyne Bloch and freshman Andrew Affleck each won their third individual event on the final day of the National Independent Conference swimming and diving championships at Oakland University Aquatics Complex in Rochester, Mich., yesterday.

Southern Methodist won the meet with 771 points, Hawai'i was second with 676.

Bloch, a Baldwin (Maui) alum, was named NIC swimmer of the year as the Rainbow Warriors swept the men's awards. Mike Gowdy was diver of the year, Mike Anderson coach of the year and Mike Brown diving coach of the year.

Bloch broke his own UH, pool and meet records in the 200-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 56.78 seconds. He earlier won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Hawai'i junior Jon Coyle's 455.55 points set meet and pool records in the 5-meter platform dive. Gowdy, who won Friday's 1-meter, had 445 points to finish second yesterday.

Affleck set a UH record in winning the 1,650 freestyle in 15:21.04 seconds. Affleck earlier won the 400 individual medley and 500 freestyle.

UH freshman Dan Blackborrow won the 200 backstroke in a school-record 1:45.67 and junior Kurt Boehm was first in the 200 butterfly in a pool-record 1:48.77.

• UH women fourth: Hawai'i sophomore Maggie Roberts won the platform diving in the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at San Antonio, Texas, yesterday.

Southern Methodist finished first with 1,006.5 points, followed by Nevada (659), Rice (506.5) and Hawai'i (487.5).

Roberts had 382.90 points to finish ahead of Nevada's Jessica Gale with 382. Roberts was named WAC diver of the year.



INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

• Chang second: Hawai'i's Victoria Chang finished second in the 3,000-meter run on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Nampa, Idaho.

Adriana Pirtea of Texas-El Paso won the race in 9 minutes, 45.39 seconds. Chang ran a 9:52.66.

Nevada won the championship with 127.5 points. Hawai'i, which took a seven athletes to the championship, was last in the eight-team field with 10 points.

Southern Methodist won the men's title. UH does not have a men's team.
