James Maynard Sr., noted restaurateur, dead at 80

James Robert Maynard Sr., a former president of the Hawai'i Restaurant Association and a lobbyist in the Hawai'i Legislature, died Feb. 8 in Anchorage, Alaska. He was 80.

Maynard was born and raised in Redondo Beach, Calif., and moved to Hawai'i in 1945. He owned and operated several Honolulu restaurants, including Chief's Hut Restaurant on Waikiki Beach, The Tiki Torch on Kalakaua Avenue and O'Toole's Irish Pub downtown.

He moved to Alaska in 1980 and worked for Boatel Alaska Inc. as a camp director at the Kuparuk oil field, but he returned frequently to Hawai'i to visit family and friends.

Maynard is survived by his children, James Robert Maynard Jr., Cristina Rothwell, John Alfred Maynard and Joseph Michael Maynard; sister Patricia Osuch; four grandchildren; and ex-wife Maria Teresa Maynard.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today at the Waikiki Yacht Club. His ashes will be scattered at sea. Final remembrances by family and friends will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the yacht club.
