UH not expecting to kick off with A&M

The University of Hawai'i has discussed a season-opening football game with Texas A&M, but does not expect the proposed Aug. 23 game to materialize.
"We have talked with Texas A&M (about) the possibility of playing A&M but nothing has come of it, and probably nothing will," an aide to athletic director Herman Frazier said on his behalf yesterday.
UH head football coach June Jones had raised the possibility of such a game in an interview with KFVE during yesterday's Manoa-Hilo baseball game.
If played, the game would match UH and Dennis Franchione at a fourth different school. Franchione has beaten UH in stops at New Mexico, Texas Christian and Alabama.
Earlier, UH had also been contacted about playing an Aug. 23 game against Texas in a game that would be exempted from the normal 13-game limit.
But talks of a UH vs. Texas game in Austin went nowhere when Longhorn officials were against playing what, for them, had the potential to become a 15-game schedule with bowl and Big 12 championship game appearances.
Meanwhile, UH is still looking for an Aug. 30 replacement for Akron, which Thursday opted out of their 5-year-old agreement. Akron will instead play Mid American Conference rival Kent State.
Frazier has pledged to find a replacement for Akron so the Warriors won't have to open the season with consecutive road games at Southern California (Sept. 13) and Nevada-Las Vegas (Sept. 20).
