UH swimmer dies after collapsing during practice

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old University of Hawai'i swimmer died after he collapsed during practice at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex pool this afternoon, according to an athletic department spokeswoman.

University officials said the swimmer was Mike Sheldt, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C.

At about 3 p.m., Emergency Medical Services received a call for a drowning or near drowning at the UH pool, according to EMS district supervisor Chris Ano.

Ano said the swimmer apparently collapsed in the pool while he was swimming. Teammates pulled him out and performed CPR and used an automatic external defibrillator. Paramedics also used a defibrillator.

According to Ano, the man was unresponsive, and was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
