A plainclothes police officer died after he was shot about 1 p.m. today following a confrontation in the Baskin-Robbins store in Kapolei Shopping Center, according to a Honolulu Police Department spokesman.

Shane Mark, 28, was arrested today after a deadly shooting in Kapolei.

The officer was identified as Glen Gaspar, 40, a 10-year veteran of the police force, according to police spokeswoman Michelle Yu.

Police arrested Shane Mark, 28, shortly after the shooting.

Acting Maj. Greg Lefcourt said the shooting victim was part of a group of officers inside the Baskin-Robbins store looking for a suspect.

The suspect, Mark, was wanted for attempted murder and multiple weapons offenses in connection with a Feb. 1 shooting at the Assembly of God Church in Moanalua.

"It all happened so quick," said Baskin-Robbins assistant manager Portia Abraham.

A man ran into the ice cream shop shortly before 1 p.m., pursued by two men wearing aloha shirts.

The two men wrestled the first man to the floor, witnesses said. But the man fired three shots, hitting one of the other two men.

Soon after, uniformed officers arrived and placed the first man under arrest.

"We were just tripping out," said Abraham. "I thought it was a bunch of guys fighting in the store, but it wasn’t just a bunch of guys. One was armed."

There were three workers and no customers in the store at the time, Abraham said.
