JUST MY STYLE
People who take chances inspire this man's style

Personal style is an elusive entity — hard to define yet easy to recognize. I see island people with unique, eclectic styles at the mall, the beach, the theaters, the gym, and the clubs. These occasional style profiles will introduce some fashion-forward men and women to our readers. Their ideas and shopping tips offer opportunities to review and perhaps renew the contents of our own closets.

In his job, Doug Jago always does the unexpected, turning fresh lemons, piles of rice or rolls of paper into art forms to create visual merchandising magic. He treats his wardrobe in much the same way, mixing and matching to express his eclectic personal style.

Name: Doug Jago

Age: 52

Occupation: Visual presentation manager, Neiman Marcus

What I'm dying to buy right now: Always — shoes and vintage glasses

The best bargain I ever found was: If you love to shop, you feel everything you buy is the best bargain — it justifies why you are always shopping. I love jackets and coats but I also love living in Hawai'i, where the lifestyle is more casual. It doesn't stop me.

I'm willing to pay more for top quality when it comes to: Quality fabric

I can never get enough: Shoes and glasses. I have been collecting frames for years. I remember as a child when my Mom took me to pick out frames from the doctor. He would pull out the book of frames no one ever wanted, and that's where I would find a great pair.

My favorite designers are: Giorgio Armani for fabric and tailoring. Dolce & Gabbana for fun, retro-inspired looks that create excitement and Jean Paul Gaultier

My must-have staples are: Shoes and silver bracelets in all sizes and weights. There's something about jewelry that is part of me. Many of my best pieces are gifts or family heirlooms, and wearing them keeps those people with me in spirit.

Three men who inspire my look are: Men willing to take a chance: In the '60s and '70s, it was David Bowie; the '80s, Prince and the '90s, Jean Paul Gaultier. Currently it is Al Tomonari, who is always impeccable.

My biggest fashion faux pas was: Wearing a wig to a lavish event and not realizing I had lost it early in the evening. Of course no one would tell me!

Where he shops: Neiman Marcus' First Call and Last Call sales, Artlines, Waikele, Banana Republic for basics

Notable quote: "Normally I dress for the position, the place and the time, but lately I seem to be getting a little funkier."
