THE LEFT LANE
'On and On' follows 'Brushfire Fairytales'

Advertiser Staff and News Services

With his debut CD "Brushfire Fairytales" closing in on more than 1.1 million in sales after a year and a half in record stores, North Shore-reared singer/songwriter Jack Johnson has slated a May 6 release for his follow-up, "On And On."

"On And On" was recorded at O'ahu's Mango Tree studios with "Brushfire" musicians Merlo Podlewski on bass and Adam Topol on drums. It was produced by Mario Caldato Jr., who has produced several CDs for the Beastie Boys.

Johnson embarks on a three-week co-headlining tour of Australia and New Zealand with Ben Harper on March 29. After that, he plays the massive Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in California on April 27.

There are no plans yet for a Hawai'i concert stop.

March Esquire highlights Hawai'i

Island surfers and celebrities don designer clothes for a 10-page fashion feature in the March 2003 issue of Esquire magazine titled "Greetings from the 50th State."

It would seem head-to-toe white is the main style statement, as the Keaulana Brothers, surfer Myles Padaca and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham model white suits by Armani, Tommy Hilfiger and Polo Ralph Lauren with white suede loafers by John Varvatos.

Other models include Henry Kapono in a retro-looking "aloha shirt" by Yohji Yamamoto, Jason Scott Lee in a DKNY sport coat and "aloha shirt" by Miu Miu and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa in a kimono by none other than Gucci. The feminine side is represented by surfer Malia Jones, Hawai'i's own supermodel.

One thing we don't get: the "lei" from Prada? And what's with those hokey hula poses? Pictured above: Brian Keaulana with his father Buffalo, center, and brother Rusty, right.
