Baraquio, Segundo trying out singing careers

PERSONALITIES: Preliminary work is under way for Miss America Angela Baraquio to make her solo recording debut under the auspices of Quiet Storm Records. Stay tuned. ...

The label also is readying a May launch of a project called "Smooth Island Jazz," which will assemble a host of diverse Island musicians performing in a realm not common to their respective turf. Folks like Malani Bilyeu of Kalapana, Barry Flanagan of Hapa, Sean Na'auao (playing nose flute) and chanter Charles Kaupu, among others. ...

STAR WATCH: Jordan Segundo, Hawai'i's "American Idol" candidate, will make his Honolulu Symphony Pops concert debut as the opening act for Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Barry Flanagan, 8 p.m. April 11 and 12 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Segundo also is a likely guest star in an upcoming Ho'okena gig with Keali'i Reichel on Maui. ...

Ikaika Kahoano, LMNT member and former O-Town boy band wannabe, will show up as a model in Crazy Shirts' forthcoming campaign. ...

If you missed Makana at the Hawai'i Theatre several months back, you can see him in more intimate environs in a pair of "secret" shows, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday at The ARTS at Marks Garage.

It'll be a solo outing, without normal advertising (except e-mails to friends and via a phone network). Tickets are $20; at the Friday show, he will play some new tunes developed for a tour of the Mainland, Japan and Europe. ...

THE LOCAL ANGLE: Country singer Randy Travis and his wife, Elizabeth, dined at Maui's Leilani's on the Beach recently, and they sang "Forever and Ever, Amen," after dining at the popular Ka'anapali restaurant. Travis is a part-time Maui resident who owns an elaborate Asian-influenced Lahaina estate and charming tropical retreat in Ka'anapali; he was taking some much-deserved R&R since the release of his latest album, "Rise and Shine," which is No. 30 on Billboard's Top Country Albums. ...

Nice to see Georgia Engel, former Islander who once co-starred on the Mary Tyler Moore TV show, in a recurring guest role as Amy's odd mother on last week's "Everybody Loves Raymond." Looks — and sounds — pretty much the same after all these years. ...

And if you venture to see "Cradle 2 the Grave," don't be surprised if you spot two Islanders in the cast: Kelly Hu ("Scorpion King" and the upcoming "X-Men 2") and Mark Dacascos ("Brotherhood of the Wolf"). ...

HERE 'N' THERE: Charly Espina and letter carrier Mark Takahama, after their wedding at the Lodge at Koele Feb. 23, honeymooned at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island. The wedding reception featured such performers as Believe, Darrell Labrado and John-John Fernandez. Espina is doing morning drive with Alaka'i Paleka on KPOA 93.5 FM on Maui. ...

ALL IN THE FAMILY: Lauren Enos, a recent Colorado graduate, has moved to Honolulu to work in Dad's restaurant. That would be Rick Enos' Compadres in Ward Centre. Rick's son Jeff is g.m. at the Napa Valley Compadres. And so the dynasty is developing. ...

Songbird Nina Keali'iwahamana and hubby Gordon Rapozo recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary at Sunday brunch at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider's Veranda. The Banyan Serenaders, (Doug Tolentino and Nahoa Lucas) dedicated "E Maliu Mai" and "Ka Loke" to the couple, and Keali'iwahamana gushed, "It was beautiful." High praise from one of Hawai'i's best, who used to be part of the "Hawai'i Calls" radio broadcasts from the Moana for years. ...
