Kailua High School pitcher Courtney Kessell received honorable mention on the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's 2002 Eastern Division all-star team, before a spectacular run through the OIA and state playoffs earned her first-team Advertiser All-State recognition.

This year, Kessell was dominant from the opening pitch, and by leading the Surfriders to a 10-0 regular-season record, she was named OIA East Player of the Year.

Kessell, a sophomore right-hander, tossed two no-hitters and had a pair of two-hitters, along with a six-hit shutout of previously unbeaten Castle.

She had 12 strikeouts each against Castle, Kaimuki and Roosevelt, and struck out 10 against Kahuku, eight against Kalani and seven versus Kaiser.

Kessell is joined on the Eastern Division all-star first team by teammates Loke Lastimosa and Danielle Young. Lastimosa was chosen as a third baseman but also played shortstop and was one of Kailua's top hitters. Young batted leadoff and provided speed on the bases.

Castle placed five players on the first team: second baseman Puna Waiolama, shortstop Kalena Souza, center fielder Sachelle Featheran, catcher Anuhea Young and pitcher Lia Pedrina.

Moanalua had two representatives in outfielder Kepua Lee and utility player Mika Tanji.

The final spot went to Kaimuki first baseman Tyleen Tausaga, who was named Player of the Year last season.

Castle's Jon Berinobis was named Coach of the Year.
