Hawai'i sumotori will miss tourney

Advertiser Staff and Wire Reports

Yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru (Wai'anae's Fiamalu Penitani) will sit out the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament this month to give his wrist more time to heal, an official said today.

Musashimaru, who was sidelined during the previous tournament in January, is still unfit to wrestle, said Tomomi Okada, an official at the grand champion's stable.

The stablemaster, Musashigawa, decided today not to field his top wrestler, Okada said. Stablemaster is a traditional term for a sumo wrestler's coach.

Musashimaru, 31, has been bothered by an injury to his left wrist, which he aggravated at the November meet. He had surgery on the wrist later that month.

His withdrawal leaves newly promoted Mongolian Asasho-ryu as the only yokozuna in this month's competition in Osaka.

BASKETBALL

PacWest honors BYUH, HPU stars: Brigham Young-Hawai'i forward Alexus Foyle and Hawai'i Pacific forward Leandro Maruoka were named Pacific West Conference co-Players of the Week.

It was the third honor for Foyle and second for Maruoka.

Foyle, the reigning PacWest Player of the Year, averaged 31 points in two victories over Montana State-Billings and one over Western New Mexico.

He leads the conference and is second nationally in scoring at 26.8 points per game.

Maruoka had double-doubles in points and rebounds in two wins over Western News Mexico and one over Montana State-Billings.

SAILING

UH women win: The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team edged Boston College by two points to win the University of South Florida Regatta yesterday in Tampa, Fla.

Hawai'i finished with 52 points, followed by Boston College (54) and Texas A&M-Galveston (94).

UH's Renee DeCurtis, Kathren Jackson and Anna Milton accumulated 23 points with six first-place finishes in the A Division.

Sam Howard and Kelly McCoy placed third in the B Division with 29.

On the West Coast, the Hawai'i co-ed team finished second in the McIntyre Team Race Intersectional, after losing to host Stanford in a race-off on the final day.

Hawai'i and Stanford were tied with 11-3 weekend records to force the race-off. USC finished third.

HIGH SCHOOL

Sacred Hearts names track coach: Sacred Hearts Academy has appointed Steve Jacobson head track and field coach.

Jacobson has been head varsity and intermediate cross country coach at St. Andrew's Priory the past four seasons. He was chosen Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls cross country Coach of the Year in 2000.

He also has been head boys varsity track coach at McKinley High and has been co-head coach of the summer Hawai'i Kai Track Club.
