Inmates accused of threatening officers

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island grand jury has indicted two inmates accused of threatening corrections officers during a Jan. 31 fire and disturbance at Hawai'i Community Correctional Center.

HCCC Warden Beryl Iramina said a fire broke out in the dayroom in the main Punahele Building, prompting jail officials to evacuate about 60 inmates. After the fire was extinguished, about four inmates refused to return to the facility. Some obtained lengths of razor wire and swung the wire at corrections officers, she said.

The inmates were brought under control with no injuries except some cuts to their hands. The cause of the fire, which did an estimated $15,000 damage, is still under investigation.

Inmates John Hatori and Gregory Andrade were indicted for first-degree promotion of prison contraband and intimidating a correctional worker.
