Mink elected to group's board

John Mink, husband of the late U.S. Rep. Patsy T. Mink, a three-time national president of Americans for Democratic Action, has been elected to the board of directors of its local chapter.

Also among officers and directors of Americans for Democratic Action/Hawaii are a former official of the local Democratic Party and two political activists.

The organization includes: president, George Simson, retired University of Hawai'i professor; vice president, Bea Becker, retired advertising agency owner; secretary, Nancy Bey Little, retired nurse and political activist; treasurer, Jim Olson, philosopher and computer student.

Directors include Mink, a hydrologist; Chuck Huxel, former executive director, Democratic Party of Hawaii; Fritz Fritschel, Lutheran pastor and former director of Hospice Hawaii; Chuck Armitage, retired union official; and alternate Jim Brewer, political activist.


Fund-raising applauded

Five Macy's stores in Hawai'i ranked among the 10 most successful fund-raising stores in Macy's "More Community" campaign across seven states and Guam. Macy's West, in recognition, has awarded the stores at Kahala Mall, Windward Mall, downtown Honolulu, Pearlridge Center and Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo $5,000 each to donate to local charities of choice.

The charities included Hale Ola, the Windward O'ahu spouse abuse center; Aloha United Way and Hawai'i Island United Way. Macy's "More Community" campaign in Hawai'i raised $372,432 to benefit Aloha United Way, American Cancer Society, Hawai'i Foodbank, and Boys and Girls Clubs on several islands.


4-H recognizes local students

Several local students received recognition at the recent 30th annual 4-H Food Show, sponsored by Kraft Foods Hawai'i at Pearl City High School:

"Top of Show" winners were:

  • Senior Division (ages 14 to 19): Naupaka Hanchett, 14, of Sacred Hearts Academy.
  • Intermediate Division (ages 12 to 13): Hannah Wong, 12, of Mililani Middle School.
  • Junior Division (ages 9 to 11): Erin Nakatsuka, 10, of Iolani School.

Sponsor Kraft Foods awarded its Kraft Foods/4-H Senior Scholarships:

  • $500 Scholarship: Jana Yakushiji, 17, of Mililani High School
  • $250 Scholarship: Dayna Park, 17, also of Mililani High School.


Groups elect new directors

New boards of directors have been announced at a number of local organizations:

  • Hawai'i Pacific Gerontological Society: president, Claudia Butler-Leslie; past president, Doug Kreider; president elect, Lei Shimizu; secretary, Nettie Stillwell; and treasurer, Richard Kato. Members-at-large include Lisa Ikeda, Dawn Kawabata, Tony Lenzer, Caron Menard, Harumi Karel, Brian Kessler and Mernie Miyasato-Crawford.
  • Planned Parenthood: president, Sharlene Bliss; vice president, Linda Wheeler; secretary, Dorothy Morris; and treasurer, Chiye Wenkam.

New board members include Marjorie Au, Dana Alden, the Rev. Neal MacPherson, Suzanne Meisenzahl, Kathryn Nelson, Hamid Pourjalall, Bob Ramsey, John Spangler, Karen Taketa, Jan Tamura, Elmira Tsang, Jan Vernon and Sharon Yoshida.


United Way honors donors

Aloha United Way has announced recipients of its 2002 Spirit of Community Awards, recognizing entrepreneurial and individual commitment to the community:

  • Company of the Year: First Hawaiian Bank, 91 percent of whose employees contributed to Aloha United Way, with a combined corporate and individual contribution of more than $746,000.
  • Coordinator of the Year: Anson Pang, a collections and recovery manager at American Savings Bank.
  • Public Sector Organization of the Year: University of Hawai'i Federal Credit Union.
  • Best First-time Campaign: Certified Management Inc.
