Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i-Hilo softball player Leinani Hashida has been selected Pacific West Conference Softball Player of the Week for helping the Vulcans to a 3-1 conference record to open the season.

Hashida, a senior first baseman from Mililani, was 9 for 14 (.643) with three RBIs in the conference games against Chaminade and Brigham Young-Hawai'i.

In six games, Hashida is batting .632 with six RBIs and four runs scored for the Vulcans (5-1). She has a slugging percentage of .632 with an on-base percentage of .667.

Hashida is the second Hawai'i player to be named PacWest Player of the Week in as many weeks and follows Hawai'i Pacific sophomore infielder Anuhea Diamond of Mililani.

MORE SOFTBALL

• Chaminade, BYUH split: Chaminade and Brigham Young-Hawai'i split a pair of Pacific West Conference games yesterday in La'ie.

A grand slam by Pua Reis in the fifth inning gave Chaminade a 4-1 win in the first game.

The Seasiders won the second game, 7-2, with two big innings — three runs in the second and four in the sixth. Reis hit another home run in the sixth inning for the Silverswords.

BASKETBALL

• BYUH moves up to 17th: The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's basketball team yesterday moved up two spots to 17th in the Division II National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 after winning three conference home games last week.

The Seasiders (17-3) also clinched the Pacific West Conference championship and became the first team in the nation to qualify for the NCAA II regional tournament.

BYUH is assured of having the fewest losses of any team in BYU-Hawai'i history. This is the first year that BYUH has been recognized in the national poll since the Seasiders joined Division II for the 1998-89 season.

Kentucky Wesleyan remained No. 1 after finishing the regular season 25-2.

GOLF

• UH women 13th: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team was in 13th place out of 14 teams in the San Jose State Spartan Invitational after the first round yesterday at the Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine shot 322. Pepperdine is leading with a 275, followed by UCLA's 283.

Pepperdine's Katherine Hull shot a 63, breaking her own NCAA record of 64 last year.

Rene Krause leads UH with a 77.
