Traveler health is topic of talks

WAILUKU, Maui — Keeping healthy during travel will be the focus of the nonprofit Health Promotion Hui's program this month.

The free public event will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. March 15 at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Scott Hoskinson, an infectious disease specialist, will discuss what to pack, including use of water filters, medical kits and insect repellents. Dr. Chad Meyer, of Kaiser Permanente's travel and tropical medicine department, will discuss immunizations, mosquito-borne diseases and traveler's diarrhea.

Hot meal delivery next

The Lanakila Meals on Wheels program will deliver hot meals to homes from Waimanalo to Kahuku beginning in July.

The Meals on Wheels program has been serving seniors for more than 30 years and provides up to 2,000 meals each day through its group dining and home delivery service.

Laura Colbert, president and chief executive officer of Lanakila, said volunteers are needed to deliver the food. Call 531-0555 to volunteer.

Lanakila is a private not-for-profit organization with a mission to support and provide for people who have physical, mental or age-related challenges.

Kailua heiau work Saturday

Volunteers are invited to clean Ulupo Heiau in Kailua and restore taro terraces nearby from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The heiau is next to the Windward YMCA, 1200 Kailua Road.

The Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club is sponsoring the project, which includes clearing nonnative plants, raking, and cutting down weeds. Volunteers should bring water and lunch, and wear work clothes.
