Dick Tomey, a former University of Hawai'i head football coach, has been named an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced yesterday.
Tomey, 64, will help coach the defensive backs.
Tomey coached for 10 years at UH before resigning to become Arizona's head coach in 1987. After resigning at Arizona at the end of the 2000 season, he worked as a color analyst on K5's telecasts of UH football games the last two years.
"I thought he did an awesome job for us," said Dan Schmidt, K5's program director. "I knew he wanted to get back into coaching because that's his passion."
Schmidt said Tomey's extensive football knowledge boosted K5's telecasts.
"He really brought the passion that he had as a coach into the broadcast booth," Schmidt said. "He felt the game, and he did a good job of translating that to the viewers."
K5 president and general manager John Fink said Tomey "will be missed. He brought a lot of professionalism and class. We really appreciate the insight Dick provided, and we wish him the best."
