Hawai'i course of the week

Advertiser Staff

HAWAI'I PRINCE GOLF CLUB
No. 8C I 407 yards (middle tees), par 4

Hawai'i Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club is the only hotel in Waikiki with its own golf course. The Hawai'i Prince Golf Club is situated on the sunny 'Ewa plain, 40 minutes west of the hotel.

• Facts, figures: Hawai'i Prince Golf Club (27 holes, A/B 6,759, B/C 6,801, C/A 6,746)) — 91-1200 Fort Weaver Rd., 'Ewa Beach, 96706. 944-4567.

Head Pro: Tim Herek. Resort. Green fees (cart mandatory): Kama'aina $48 weekdays, $59 weekends (tax included), Prince Hotel guest $90, non-resident $135. Twilight (after 2:30 p.m.), kama'aina $25 riding, $15 walking, hotel guest $40, non-resident $50. Juniors (17-under) $25, must be accompanied by an adult.

Designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay and opened in 1992, this unique course boasts 27 dramatic holes over three challenging nine-hole layouts — the only golf course of its kind in Hawai'i. It occupies 270 acres and offers stunning views of the rain-carved Wai'anae mountains.

Each nine has an identity of its own, but the common feature shared is the 10 lakes that dot the course. There are 90 bunkers to test your game as well. The most challenging 18-hole combination, A/C, requires accuracy from tee to green with 13 water hazards coming into play.

Although a fairly straight hole from tee to green, No. 8 on the C course is one of the most challenging holes. This par-4 measures 458 yards from the back tees.

It is a long, demanding hole with water guarding the entire right side of the fairway. After you get your drive in the short grass, the approach to the green will require some thought. Four bunkers surround the front portion of the green making club selection critical. Take enough club to get it to the middle of the green, as long is better than short.

Hawai'i Prince Golf Club offers a full range of amenities, including an all-grass driving range, three putting greens, chipping green and fully stocked pro shop. For the golfer looking to take their game to the next level, the Hawai'i Prince Golf Academy offers PGA teaching and instruction programs for everyone. Bird of Paradise restaurant is the perfect place to relax, have a snack and enjoy a cold drink.
