The Buzz

Say mah ALO

The Pussycat Lounge gets down and dirty with the arrival of ALO — Steve Adams, Zach Gill, Dave Brogan and Dan Lebowitz — Tuesday. Here on their ALO'ha Hawai'i Tour, the band is known for combining rock, funk, blues and acid jazz with special effects and comedy and have played with such acts as James Brown, Jack Johnson and the Brass Monkey Brass Band.

Doors open at 9 p.m. at Wave Waikiki, for 21 and older. Local band Quadraphonix opens the night, with DJs KSM, Subzero, Daddy's Girl, Jrama and A2Z getting into the groove. Tickets are $5 before 10 p.m., $10 after. 941-0424.

The band also performs at Casanova on Maui at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Tropics in Kailua at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Sand Island Rhythm and Blues Club at 9 p.m. Thursday. ALO wraps up the tour back at the Wave on March 14 and 15, with doors opening at 9 p.m.


Get Up Kids cancel concert

Veteran emo band The Get Up Kids canceled its concert at Pipeline Café because of a member's family emergency. The band was to play Saturday night.

Burn, baby, burn

Feel the beat and start moving as Audiolab's monthly drum-n-bass party brings in Vector Burn tonight at Café Sistina. This hot DJ burst upon the scene three years ago with his unconventional blend of sounds that marked him as a pioneer. Also performing tonight are Bass-X, Kause, Konception, Critical Mass, Gold Leader and Mase.

Audiolab hits the scene the first Friday of every month 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Cover is $8, or free before 11 p.m., for 21 and older. 596-0061.


Hawaiian voyage, Cazimero-style

Surround yourself with the harmonious sounds of The Brothers Cazimero — that's Robert on bass and Roland on guitar — as they take the stage tonight as part of the Hawai'i Theatre's "A Vintage Voyage" Hawaiian music series. Leina'ala Kalama Heine steps in with her Hawaiian hula hands to delight the crowd.

The show begins at 8 p.m., with the Pua Melia Trio providing the pre-show entertainment at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30. 528-0506.


New Shangai Circus tours the state

Be amazed by the breathtaking spectacle of the New Shanghai Circus as the incredible acrobats of China return to Hawai'i for a multitude of shows.

Years before Cirque du Soleil appeared, the Chinese were performing mystifying acts involving balance and contortion. Children and adults will delight in the nimble moves and mesmerizing performances of the ensemble.

Honolulu shows are 7:30 p.m. Thursday and March 14 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Thursday tickets are $20 general, $15 children and seniors. March 14 shows are $20, $25 and $30 general and $15 and $20 for children and seniors. 526-4400.

'Godot' with a Japanese twist

Samuel Beckett's famous absurdist play "Waiting for Godot" comes to the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre's stage Wednesday through March 15 at 8 p.m. and March 16 at 2 p.m.

The plot centers on two tramps as they wait on a country road for Mr. Godot. Nothing happens twice in this two-act "tragicomedy." The play will be performed using kyogen elements incorporated by director Tim Wiler, an M.F.A. candidate.

Tickets are $9 general, $7 seniors, military, University of Hawai'i faculty, staff, youths and non-UHM students, $3 UHM students. A rap session follows the March 14 performance. 956-7655.

Love in revue

Succumb to the alluring temptation of "Seduction," a new cabaret opening Thursday at The ARTS at Marks Garage. Join four women as they sing and dance around their tales of life and love. Naomi Mal plays the innocent one waiting for her Mr. Right. Julie Capili is more experienced and knows most will do anything for the excitement of a new love. Zenia Zambrano heats up the stage with her sultry style, while Katie Doyle plays her mature and cynical friend.

All the world's a stage at O'ahu schools

Junior Albert Iokepa has the title role in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School. Based on the "Peanuts" comic strips, the show also begins tonight.
Schools around the island are busy this weekend with play openings:
  • Saint Louis students collaborate with others from Punahou, Kamehameha, Sacred Hearts, Maryknoll, Waldorf, La Pietra and Cathedral to produce "Pippin." The music and dancing extravaganza opens with a gala night today at Mamiya Theatre. From 5:30-7:30 p.m., there will be a cocktail and pupu reception and pre-show entertainment, with the show to follow. Tickets are $100, 739-4800. Other performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and March 14-15, and 2 p.m Sunday and March 16. Tickets are $15 general, $10 students, seniors and military. 739-4896.
  • Mid-Pacific Institute will stage "Pan Si Dong: Cave of the Coiled Webs" tonight through Sunday and March 14-16. The traditional Jingju opera (also known as Beijing opera) will be performed in English and tells the story of the travels of a monk and his three servants. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays in the Kawaiaha'o Recital Hall on campus. Tickets are $10 general, $5 seniors. 973-5066.
  • Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Arts and Communication Learning Center presents "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." The musical is based on the popular comic strip "Peanuts" by Charles Schulz. Shows are 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday and March 14-15 in the cafeteria. Tickets are $5 pre-sale or $6 at the door. 668-5823.
  • The Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian cultural events series presents "Looking In ... Looking Out: Foreign and Native Perspectives" at 7 p.m. Monday. The dramatic portrayal has Terence Knapp depicting the views of Capt. James Cook, the Rev. Hiram Bingham and the Rev. Lorenzo Lyons toward Hawaiians. Leo Anderson Akana defends Hawaiians as Queen Lili'uokalani. The performance will be held on the Kapalama campus, at the Ke'elikolani Performing Arts Center choral room. Admission is free. 842-8655


Tahitian dance

Tahiti Nui International presents "Heiva I Honolulu" beginning Thursday through March 15 at the Waikiki Shell. This Tahitian dance competition will feature performances with groups from the Mainland, Tahiti, Japan and Hawai'i. Visiting from Tahiti will be Heremoana Maamaatuahutapu, director of Tahiti's cultural and arts, and Maco Tevane, director and professor of culture and language.

Thursday events include solo competition and a Mr. and Miss Tahiti Nui International election 10 a.m.-6 p.m. At 9 that evening, the party moves to the 'Ohana Waikiki East Lobby Conference Room, where there will be a social gathering with music and entertainment.

On March 14, the Shell heats up again with group, solo and couple finalists in dance competitions that go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Later that day, Tahitian dance group Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti will perform at 8 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m., with pre-show entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for this show are $10 lawn, $15 upper terrace, $20 terrace and $25 poolside.

March 15 marks the final day of the competition, beginning at 10 a.m., with the awards ceremony 5:30-7 p.m.

Gates open at 8 a.m. each day for participant registration, public seating and arts and crafts shopping. Admission for the day competitions are $8 each day or $10 for the pool area. 526-4400.


All about Eastern Europe

Familiarize yourself with the cultures of Eastern Europe at the family-focused Eastern European Festival Saturday. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Wo International Center at Punahou School offers a myriad of activities, demonstrations and foods. Folks from countries throughout Eastern Europe will share stories and traditions. Enjoy music, dance, traditional foods and storytelling from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Philippines favorites in concert

Philippines vocalists Martin Nievera and Regine Velasquez perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hawai'i Convention Center as part of their 2003 World Concert Tour.

Nievera, a one-time Hawai'i resident, has been part of the Philippine scene as a recording act, concert favorite, movie star and television host. Velasquez has made a name for herself as "Asia's songbird" and has landed roles in plays and movies.
