Big Island phone scam reported

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are investigating a telephone scam that apparently is targeting elderly people.

An elderly woman reported that she had been called by someone who said he was representing the "Overseas Lucky Corp." The caller told her she was one of 25 people chosen to win a $5 million lottery, said Hawai'i County police detective Thomas Waltjen.

The caller told the woman there was a one-time charge of $498 for her to enter the contest. Later, another person called and told her she won the jackpot, Waltjen said. The second caller then asked her for her bank account number so the corporation could withdraw the $498.

The woman later discovered that more than $500 had been automatically withdrawn from her bank account, and she never heard back about her alleged lottery winnings.

Anyone with information about the scam or who has been victimized by it should call Waltjen at (808) 961-2378 or the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311.
